Objective
Choose an existing novel and design the cover and interior pages. The design should reflect the themes and narrative of the novel while following typographic rules.
Solution
I chose to design the novel, The Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides. In the book, a group of neighborhood boys look back upon a year of their adolescence when five sisters commit suicide. The boys and the five Lisbon sisters live in a middle-class suburb sometime during the 70s.

I use flower petals, a metaphor for innocence and romance, to represent each sister. On the cover, they are represented as a whole. When the book is turned over each girl is broken, a loose petal next to their name representing their eventual separation in death.

I used watercolors, a soft color palette, and thin typeface to portray the girl's fragility and feminine youth as well as the soft color palette and thin typeface.
