Objective
Design posters to advertise a band and their upcoming gig. The poster content was given two weeks prior to its due date without the opportunity for critique.
Solutions
Merle Haggard
For this poster, I wanted to combine the style of classic gig posters with vector illustration. Many of Haggard's most iconic songs revolve around drinking and that is represented in the illustration. The typography, color, and textures are gritty and layered to represent the tone of this iconic country artist.and textures are gritty and layered to represent the tone of this iconic country artist.
Explosions in the Sky
For this poster, I took inspiration from the name of the band and one of their contribution to the show Friday Night Lights. I used photography to capture the headlights of my car to mirror football stadium lights. Keeping a long exposure allowed the light to expand, giving the effect of the light exploding into the rest of the composition.
Charles Bradley
For this poster, I wanted to capture not only the feeling of his music but also how he presents himself. After looking at images of him performing I noticed that one of his most common moves while singing was to outstretch his arms, the fringe of his jacket giving the illusion of wings. I represented this with an eagle, not only physically representing him but also metaphorically in his American soul music. A man who performed all his life but didn’t put out a studio album until later in life, the white frames represent him finally breaking through into the industry.
Chet Faker
For this poster, I focused on the style and lyrics of Faker’s music. Taking inspiration from lyrics such as “talk is cheap” and the lyrical themes of sex, love, and communication I illustrated a couple. The line drawing can be seen as a couple right before they kiss, or right before they tell a secret, either way, it is an intimate moment. The stark white background, modern typography, and illustration portray the artist's musical and personal style
